Disclaimer: If you are my landlord or insurance agent and are reading this I will deny all claims and say that it is a work of fiction.
But the truth is I have a problem. Over the last few months I have developed the habit of setting off our fire alarm far too frequently.
Sure I refuse to use the fans above our stove when I cook, and perhaps I’ve been known to leave the teapot brewing then leave the room and take a nap, and maybe I light candles then go for a run without remembering to blow them out, but I’m a responsible adult – I promise.
Alyssa tends to find this habit more humorous than dangerous, but as someone who rarely forgets things I think I have developed a serious problem. I now find myself hanging out with friends and thinking ‘Uh oh – I think I left the stove on’. I’m completely paranoid.
The upside, of course, is that as someone who travels a lot I do feel safe knowing that after repeated testing our smoke detector has proved to be completely flawless.
I am that crazy girl who decided to start not just one… but TWO blogs! As you know I love crafting, cooking, and fashion. Since this blog is dedicated mostly to Chico and my life together, I wanted to have a separate blog for all of the “girly” stuff.
It’s called The Modernette.
Hope you enjoy it!
Okay, so remember how I said surprises are hard to pull off between the two of us? Well, Chico managed to escape this and actually pulled one over on me… a trip to FL!
Since we realized that this year will be pretty crazy with the band, we had been talking about taking a trip on one of my upcoming 3 day weekends. So- a few days before MLK weekend, Chico called my grandparents to see if we could stay at their condo in FL for the weekend! We had been talking about doing this for a long time!
My family had taken vacations there frequently during my childhood, but I haven’t been out there in 8 years!
Here are some of the highlights from our trip…
Now I can check off my Hope for 2012–
“Make Time for a Weekend Roadtrip to a (sort of) New Destination”!
What a great way to celebrate my birthday! Thanks Chico! 🙂

We may not have 5 stars, a swimming pool, or even a Yelp page for that matter…. but since the 1st of the year, our house has been a bit of a hotel!
We have had the privilege of hosting 3 sets of guests in the past 3 weeks! I never thought January was a month of travel, but lately we have had a handful of traveling friends and family members.
When Chico and I were house hunting, one of our main goals in finding THE place was that it could be a home away from home for our friends and family. Our place definitely does the trick and we love having guests over!
I love to entertain. It’s something I’m not a pro at yet, but hosting has given me quite the practice. Hospitality is an area I want to continue to grow in- good meals (trying to work on this one!), good conversation, and good companionship. We look up to Charlie & Andi who started The Art House– they are always serving those around them and really embody these great qualities.
As much as we like to joke that we are “Hotel D”, we really do enjoy the company of our friends and family!
2012 is filling up fast, so you better book your reservations now! 😉
This year has been crazy so far.
As you can probably tell from the lack of blog posts, 2012 decided to press the Hyper-Speed button. Here is a little update as to what has been happening in our lives:
To start the year off, the band has been keeping Chico WAY busy! Their record came out 2 weeks ago and hit the #1 spot on the iTunes charts! We are soooo happy for them and I’m sure it’s going to be a very exciting and busy year!
They also had their album release show that weekend. The place was jam-packed and the fans showed so much loyalty and support. It was such a memorable night.
There has been more to this madness, which we will share in later posts… I even got to check off one of my Hopes for 2012!
I know I know it’s 2012 and there are gonna be a lot of great records this coming year (hint hint: check out iTunes today for a certain band’s new record!). But before I completely let go of 2011 I just wanted to post a few of my favs from the year:
Bon Iver – “Bon Iver”
Augustana – “Augustana”
Adele – “21”
The Civil Wars – “Barton Hollow”
The Horrible Crowes – “Elsie”
Coldplay – “Mylo Xyloto”
Wolf Gang – “Suego Faults”
The Script – “Science and Faith”
What are some of your favs?

I’m not very good at discipline. It’s definitely something I need to work on.
Getting up in the morning? You’ll have to peel me out of bed.
Eating Healthy? You’ll have to pry that pack of Starburst out of my hand.
So instead of dedicating my time to a New Years Resolution like working out 7 days a week, I have decided to make a list of Hopes for 2012.
1) Plant a Garden! (Already have part of this one checked off!)
2) Learn basic Italian through Rosetta Stone.
3) Go Camping!
4) Make time for a weekend road trip to a new destination.
5) Go to The Symphony, a Broadway Show, or a play.
6) Get to know more people in Nashville.
7) Read more books.
8) Take a sewing class.
What are some of your Hopes for 2012?
